The Tool: Tử Vi

6.5 From “Weapon” to “Tool”

~27 min read

In the Bát Tự (Four Pillars) section (3.1), we found the Dụng Thần (the favourable element)—the kind of energy that is lacking and needs to be supplied. That was the theory. In Tử Vi (Purple Star astrology) we move into practice. Tử Vi answers the question: what does that energy look like, and where is it?

Picture it this way:

  • Bát Tự says: “You need Metal energy (decisiveness) for balance.”

  • Tử Vi points precisely: “That Metal energy sits in the star Thất Sát (Miếu) in the Quan Lộc palace (Career).”

So this section is the moment we take inventory of the armoury. At the level of Mệnh (the Given), a star in Miếu/Vượng is a gift (Talent). At the level of Nghiệp (the Pattern), it is where we are most likely to grow complacent and to overuse it (Trap). At the level of Ý Thức (Awareness), it is a powerful instrument for service (Tool).

A. STARS IN MIẾU/VƯỢNG—FROM INSTINCT TO AWAKENING

1. The principle: “the stronger the light, the deeper the shadow it casts”

A star in the Miếu/Vượng state (its brightest) shows that the energy there is abundant, pure, and easily activated. Yet by Hawkins’ law: strong energy at a low frequency (Force) has all the greater capacity to destroy.

The practical formula:

Achievement = Capacity (Miếu/Vượng) × Vibrational Frequency (Hawkins)

  • If the frequency is < 200 (Fear / Pride): the Miếu/Vượng star becomes a “tyrant.” For instance, Tử Vi Miếu becomes one who imposes his will; Vũ Khúc Miếu becomes cold and ruthless.

  • If the frequency is > 200 (Courage / Love): the Miếu/Vượng star becomes a “builder.”

2. Table of transformation in consciousness for the 14 Chính tinh (major stars)

The table below helps you see at which level you are wielding this “weapon.”

StarCore talent (Gift)Low frequency (Force < 200)High frequency (Power > 200)
Tử ViLeadership, governancePride: tyrannical, treating oneself as the centre of the universe.Service: selfless leadership (Servant Leadership).
Thiên CơIntelligence, strategyAnxiety: over-calculating, distrustful, prone to worry.Wisdom: connective intelligence that solves problems at the root.
Thái DươngRadiance, givingVainglory: fond of display, needing gratitude, burning out the spirit.Benevolence: shining for the sake of truth, indifferent to recognition.
Vũ KhúcExecution, decisivenessIsolation: cold, hard, estranged from loved ones.Discipline: acting decisively while still gentle and caring.
Thiên ĐồngEnjoyment, harmonyStagnation: lazy, expectant, passively pleasure-seeking.Healing: leading others toward ease and genuine compassion.
Liêm TrinhSelf-respect, integrityWoundedness: extreme, easily hurt, excessively proud and envious.Integrity: guarding one’s morals with an upright heart.
Thiên PhủManagement, prosperityConservatism: stingy, hoarding, overprotective.Treasury: knowing how to manage, preserve, and grow wealth sustainably.
Thái ÂmEmotion, refinementGloom: over-sensitive, easily hurt in spirit.Meditation: clear intuition, insight, access to deeper currents.
Tham LangVersatility, many talentsDesire: addiction, craving, chasing surface materialism. The artist: a well-rounded artist, entertainment that heals.
Cự MônLanguage, analysisGossip: nit-picking, disparaging, aggressive in speech.Right speech: using words to enlighten and to defend the truth.
Thiên TướngSupport, managementFence-sitting: lacking a point of view, easily used and made to submit. The trusted aide: a virtuous supporter who keeps to principle and stands up for the weak.
Thiên LươngEducation, moralityDogmatism: fond of lecturing, dogmatic, remote from reality. The counsellor: gentle, empathetic guidance that helps others transform.
Thất SátDecisiveness, courageRage: violent, aggressive, hot-tempered, overreacting.Valour: a righteous warrior, daring to confront, defending the truth.
Phá QuânBreaking form, changeDestruction: blind destruction, opposition, instability.Revolution: tearing down the outworn to build a better new order.

3. The crucial filter: cross-checking against the Dụng Thần

This is the most important step for avoiding “energy indigestion.” Carry out the following cross-check:

  1. Step 1: List the Miếu/Vượng stars in your Tử Vi chart.

  2. Step 2: Identify each star’s element (for example, Thất Sát is Metal, Thái Dương is Fire).

  3. Step 3: Compare it with the Dụng Thần (the deficient element) you found in the Bát Tự section.

Conclusion:

  • Case 1: a Miếu star that matches the Dụng Thần.

    • Meaning: this is a “treasured sword.” You have both the talent and the favourable current of energy.

    • Action: pour your full strength into developing the sphere of the palace that holds this star. This is the shortcut to success.

  • Case 2: a Miếu star that is a Kỵ Thần (the unfavourable element, one you already have in excess).

    • Meaning: this is a “wild horse.” You are very good at this domain, but the more you do it, the more unbalanced you become (stress, temper, or isolation).

    • Action: use it consciously. Use it to serve others, not for yourself.

4. Illustrative case study (a view from consciousness)

Case: a Fire Day Master (strong self)—excess Fire—needing Water/Metal.

  • The chart: Thái Dương (Fire) well placed in the Quan Lộc palace (career).

  • The contradiction: Thái Dương is very bright (Miếu), showing this person has leadership talent and loves to stand out. But because the Bát Tự already has excess Fire, the more they stand out, the more easily they “burn out,” grow hot-tempered and tyrannical.

  • Transformation (Nghiệp → Ý Thức):

    • Instead of leading like a “blazing sun” (forcing everyone to revolve around them—Force),

    • they shift to being the one who “kindles the fire / trains others” (using their light to illuminate the way for others—Power).

    • They learn to step back (adding Water—humility) so their staff can shine.

  • Result: the Thái Dương talent is still put to use, but they are no longer scorched by the Kỵ Thần (Fire).

B. THE SIX AUSPICIOUS STARS—COSMIC RESOURCES

1. Their nature: benefactors, or “amplifiers”?

In the old fatalistic mindset, the Six Auspicious Stars (Lục Cát Tinh) were likened to “saviours” who appear to solve your problems. But in Tử Vi Tâm Thức we redefine them:

The Six Auspicious Stars are “amplifiers.”

  • If you are a good seed, the auspicious stars are the water and fertiliser that help you sprout faster.

  • If you are a hollow seed (lazy, dependent), the auspicious stars only add to your dependence and delusion.

The operating formula:

Result = Your Own Effort (the Cause) × the Help of the Auspicious Stars (the Condition)

If the Cause = 0, then however great the Condition, the Result is still 0. And so the benefactor appears only when the student is ready.

2. Decoding the 6 auspicious stars through the lens of consciousness

I divide the Six Auspicious into 3 groups of energy so you can more easily recognise where your “resources” lie.

Group 1: support for the INTELLECT (Văn Xương—Văn Khúc)

This is the kind of benefactor that comes from knowledge and inspiration.

StarForm of supportLow frequency (Force)—the trapHigh frequency (Power)—transformation
Văn XươngBooks, credentials, procedure. The benefactor is a teacher, or a book that changes your life.Dogmatism: rote learning, empty theory, using knowledge for sophistry.Wisdom: turning knowledge into realised understanding to solve problems.
Văn KhúcArt, intuition, eloquence. The benefactor is an inspirer, a muse.Illusion: living out of touch with reality, using sweet words to deceive or to escape.Creativity: using art and language to heal and to connect people.
Group 2: support from ASSOCIATES (Tả Phù—Hữu Bật)

This is the kind of benefactor that comes from peer relationships.

StarForm of supportLow frequency (Force)—the trapHigh frequency (Power)—transformation
Tả PhùThe right hand: one who helps directly, with concrete action. Friends, colleagues.Factionalism: gathering a crowd, easily drawn into wrongdoing.Cooperation: teamwork, knowing how to delegate and to trust.
Hữu BậtThe left hand: moral support, a home front, a strategist.Dependence: lacking a point of view, shifting with the majority, leaning on others. The adviser: the capacity to listen and to connect resources with flexibility.
Group 3: support in OPPORTUNITY (Thiên Khôi—Thiên Việt)

This is the kind of benefactor that comes from a superior or the system.

StarForm of supportLow frequency (Force)—the trapHigh frequency (Power)—transformation
Thiên KhôiA male leader, policy. An open chance for advancement, being promoted.Coercion: being squeezed by a superior, or becoming domineering oneself once in power.Guidance: meeting a caring mentor, and later becoming a mentor to others.
Thiên ViệtA female leader, a hidden opportunity. Special favour, unexpected luck.Low self-worth: feeling unworthy (imposter syndrome) or riding on borrowed power.Growth: seizing the chance to raise oneself, proving real ability.

3. Case studies & the lesson of transformation

Let us see how the Six Auspicious operate at two different frequencies through real examples:

Case 1: Mệnh with Xương–Khúc (the artist / scholar)
  • Force scenario (low frequency): this person is very clever, speaks and writes well, but spends a lifetime “daydreaming in broad daylight.” They use their eloquence to excuse their laziness. When faced with difficulty they complain and wait for others to rescue them. → Result: a gifted life gone to waste.

  • Power scenario (high frequency): they use their knowledge to discipline themselves. When they meet a teacher (a benefactor), they learn ravenously and turn that knowledge into products (books, courses, works). → Result: lasting renown.

Case 2: Quan Lộc with Tả–Hữu (the manager / connector)
  • Force scenario: at work they always lean on colleagues and push hard tasks onto others. When they have power, they build a clique for infighting. → Result: when they fall on hard times, no one helps; the “clique” scatters and the “friends” are gone.

  • Power scenario: they understand Tả/Hữu as the skill of working with people. They help colleagues when things go well, so when they run into trouble, the whole group stands up to protect them. → Result: a career advanced by collective strength.

Case 3: Cung Di (the Travel palace) with Khôi–Việt (the one who meets their time)
  • Force scenario: they meet luck out in the world, are favoured by the boss, and so grow arrogant. Thinking themselves brilliant, they disdain procedure. → Result: when the luck runs out (the great cycle ends), they fall hard for want of real substance.

  • Power scenario: they treat luck as a “loan” from the universe. Each time they are helped, they redouble their effort to repay it with real contribution. → Result: luck transformed into lasting merit.

4. Closing words on the Six Auspicious

Remember: the benefactor is not in the chart; the benefactor is in the way you live.

A chart with Khôi–Việt only means you have a good “antenna” for catching opportunity. But if your transmitter (your consciousness) broadcasts nothing but sad songs of poverty and complaint, you will catch no signal from those who have succeeded.

To meet people of stature (Khôi–Việt), you must raise yourself to stature. To have companions (Tả–Hữu), you must know how to share. To have those who enlighten you (Xương–Khúc), you must hold an attitude of open seeking.

C. THE THREE TRANSFORMATIONS (KHOA—QUYỀN—LỘC): THE MECHANISM THAT ACTIVATES ENERGY

1. The concept of the Four Transformations: the verbs of destiny

In Tử Vi we often overemphasise the Stars (nouns) and forget the Four Transformations (Tứ Hóa, the verbs).

  • Tử Vi the star is “the King” (a noun).

  • But what is that King doing? Bestowing rewards (Hóa Lộc), giving orders (Hóa Quyền), reading books (Hóa Khoa), or brooding (Hóa Kỵ)?

The Four Transformations are four changing states of energy:

  1. Hóa Lộc (spring): sprouting, arising, desire, the flow of wealth.

  2. Hóa Quyền (summer): bursting forth, action, consolidating position, imposing the will.

  3. Hóa Khoa (autumn): harvest, reputation, order, understanding and healing.

  4. Hóa Kỵ (winter): ending, hiding away, debt, and the lesson not yet learned (discussed in 3.2.2).

If the chart is a house, then the Three Transformations (Khoa–Quyền–Lộc) are the plumbing, wiring, and comfortable furnishings. Without them the house still stands, but cold and lifeless.

2. Decoding the Three Transformations through the Hawkins lens

We will not ask what the Three Transformations “give us,” but “what capacity of consciousness they demand.”

a. HÓA LỘC—the flow of prosperity

People usually think of Hóa Lộc as “money.” But the essence of Hóa Lộc is the arising of desire and satisfaction. It is the energy of “adding.”

LevelPsychological expressionHawkins frequency
Force (instinct)Desire: wanting more, hoarding, indulging in material things, feasting, extravagant spending. The feeling of “never enough.” Easily enslaved by money.125 (Desire)
Power (awakening)Abundance: the mindset of “plenty.” Here Hóa Lộc is generosity, gratitude, and sharing. Understanding the law that “the open-handed are blessed by heaven.”350 (Acceptance)—500 (Love)

Advice: If you have Hóa Lộc, beware the trap of indulgence. Transform “wanting to receive” into “wanting to give.” Water (Lộc) stays clean only when it is allowed to flow on.

b. HÓA QUYỀN—the strength of the will

Hóa Quyền turns a gentle star strong, and a strong star tyrannical. Its essence is the energy of execution.

LevelPsychological expressionHawkins frequency
Force (instinct)Control: hot-tempered, fond of imposing, conservative, an oversized ego. Using power to mask an inner fear. Fond of win-lose struggle.150 (Anger)—175 (Pride)
Power (awakening)Empowerment: decisiveness, daring to take responsibility. Awakened Hóa Quyền is one who dares to bear the burden, using power to protect and uplift the weak.200 (Courage)—310 (Willingness)

Advice: One with Hóa Quyền must learn the lesson of “yielding.” True power does not need to shout. True power is a quiet influence.

c. HÓA KHOA—the light of wisdom

Hóa Khoa is regarded as the “foremost resolver.” Why? Because only wisdom can resolve suffering at its root. Hóa Khoa is not just a credential; it is understanding.

LevelPsychological expressionHawkins frequency
Force (instinct)Vanity: face-saving, fear of losing face, hypocrisy. Using knowledge to burnish one’s name or to judge others.175 (Pride)
Power (awakening)Clarification: coherent, scientific, objective thinking. The capacity for self-healing (Khoa is medicine). Renown comes naturally, like the fragrance of a flower.400 (Reason)—540 (Peace)

D. TUẦN AND TRIỆT—TWO SILENT TEACHERS

1. The concept: what are Tuần and Triệt?

If the Four Transformations are the “verbs” that activate energy, then Tuần and Triệt are the “adverbs” that reduce its amplitude or change its direction. They are the two quietest filters in the chart.

CriterionTUẦN (Tuần Trung Không Vong)TRIỆT (Triệt Lộ Không Vong)
MetaphorThe cocoon: wrapping, covering, dimming, incubating within. The brake / the dam: blocking, cutting off, damming the flow.
Psychological feel“Blurring”: a feeling of being sealed in, wanting to act but unable to break out, seeing the road through fog.“Shock”: all is well, then suddenly it collapses, the load falls, one must stop or turn another way.
Nature of the energyTurned inward (internalisation). Slow, murmuring.Restructuring (reconstruction). Strong, clear.
Timing of impactA lifelong, lingering influence, lighter with age (like aged wine).A strong impact in early life (before 30–35), then gradually easing (like a lock opening).

2. The principle of impact: a filter of consciousness

Tuần and Triệt do not distinguish good from evil; they operate by the principle of “reducing amplitude and increasing depth.”

a. Their effect on the Chính tinh (the governing stars)
  • On a good star (Miếu/Vượng): Tuần–Triệt dims the aura.

    • Low frequency (Force): this person feels their talent held back, grows embittered, blames circumstance.

    • High frequency (Power): they understand that the universe wants them to be humble. They use that “restrained” time to cultivate inner strength. When their moment comes (passing beyond Tuần–Triệt), their success is very durable.

  • On a bad star (Hãm địa / Sát Tinh): Tuần–Triệt is a “toxin filter.”

    • It confines the wild beast (the Sát Tinh), so the harm cannot break out fiercely. This is the greatest grace of Tuần–Triệt.

b. Transformation of consciousness through Tuần–Triệt
StateResponse at the Force level (< 200)Response at the Power level (> 200)
Meeting TUẦN (besieged)Stagnation & suppression: struggling to break free in vain, growing lazy, giving up, mild depression.Patience & incubation: accepting a phase of “hibernation.” Focusing on study and deep research. Understanding that “to fly, the butterfly must endure the tearing of the cocoon.”
Meeting TRIỆT (stopped short)Collapse & resentment: when the upheaval strikes (job loss, breakup), they collapse entirely, taking it as the end.Letting go & rebirth: they read the upheaval as a sign—“this road is a dead end; time to turn onto a new one.” They can reset their life very fast and very strongly.

3. Case study: decoding the lesson of Tuần–Triệt

Let us see what Tuần–Triệt teaches through concrete examples.

Case 1: Mệnh with Thái Dương (the Sun) meeting Triệt
  • Image: the midday sun blotted out by black clouds (an eclipse).

  • How it shows in life: this person has ability and a longing to shine (Thái Dương) but a deeply troubled start. Whenever their standing rises a little, it collapses. In youth they often lack confidence, or their confidence is battered by life.

  • The lesson in consciousness: Thái Dương by nature loves acclaim, loves to be looked up to. Triệt is here to teach the lesson: “Shine because you want to, not for other people’s applause.”

  • Transformation: when they let go of the face-saving ego (dropping Force), their light becomes warm, deep, and quietly pervasive. This is the makings of a sage or an anonymous adviser.

Case 2: Cung Tật Ách (health / the inner life) with Hóa Kỵ meeting Tuần
  • Image: a cloud of poison gas (Hóa Kỵ) sealed inside a stoppered jar (Tuần).

  • How it shows in life:

    • Positive: rarely caught up in loud external gossip. Great misfortunes are usually softened into small ones.

    • Negative (the risk): the pain and resentment cannot escape. They brood in secret, blame themselves (self-blame), and are prone to quiet psychological illness or chronic, hard-to-detect internal disease.

  • The lesson in consciousness: learn to “release the valve.”

  • Transformation: instead of suppression (the mechanism of Tuần), they need to find safe channels to release the energy—journaling, meditation, or art—so the “poison gas” can escape a little at a time.

Case 3: Cung Tài Bạch (money) meeting Triệt
  • Image: a flowing river meeting a hydroelectric dam.

  • How it shows in life: money gathers and scatters erratically. At times they earn a great deal and then lose it all. Hard to hold cash for long.

  • The lesson in consciousness: learn the lesson of “impermanence” in material things. Money is not a possession; it is a flow.

  • Transformation: do not try to hoard cash (easily broken by Triệt). Convert money into durable forms of wealth (land, knowledge, merit). When you stop clinging to the number in the account, the flow of money circulates again in new ways (through the gaps in the dam).

4. Do not fear Tuần–Triệt

If your chart is heavily marked by Tuần–Triệt, congratulations. The universe rates you a “good student,” which is why it assigns you the hard exercises.

  • Tuần gives you depth.

  • Triệt gives you fortitude.

A life without Tuần–Triệt may be smooth, but it is often bland. One who passes through Tuần–Triệt and awakens to the Way often carries an extraordinary bearing.
