The Hawkins Scale

8.1 An Introduction to the Map of Consciousness

~22 min read

Some systems are born to measure success and failure; others are born to illuminate the heart. David R. Hawkins’ Map of Consciousness belongs to the second kind. Let us agree on one thing from the start: this scale is not used to define who you are or what rank you hold, but to suggest to you where you are standing in this present moment.

When an event occurs, life does not fork because the event itself is so large, but because the consciousness within each person responds differently. It is that response which quietly goes on writing the next chapter of a destiny.

A. An opening story: one event, three forks in the road

On some days, life needs only a brief notice to expose the energetic foundation of each person. The same circumstance, the same familiar rupture, yet each person’s inner stance opens onto a different realm. In that moment, the Tam Giác Vàng (the Golden Triangle) of destiny appears clearly:

  • Mệnh (the Given): Provides the shared context.

  • Nghiệp (the Pattern): Pulls us back into old, fearful reflexes.

  • Ý Thức (Awareness — the Choice): The place where we pause and choose how to move.

Imagine the story of three men who all receive a termination notice on a Monday morning. Their Tử Vi (Purple Star astrology) charts might all be passing through an unlucky period of Thiên Không or Song Hao—loss and change. But their realities unfold as follows:

PersonReaction (the fruit of Nghiệp)Frequency (Hawkins)Underlying mechanism
Person AFalls into panic, cannot sleep: "I’m finished, there’s no way I’ll ever find work again."50 — Fear / the Force zoneDriven along by the force of Nghiệp until the soul is lost. Consciousness is dominated by a debilitated Sát tinh (malefic star); the survival instinct takes over.
Person BFlies into a rage, pounds the furniture, blames the boss: "So unfair! All those years of effort washed away!"150 — Anger / the Force zoneA reaction from trauma and a wounded ego. The energy explodes but destroys quickly and leads to no real change, because this is a reaction, not a solution.
Person CStays calm, takes three days to reflect: "For a long time I have blocked the truth that this step was waiting for me. Now I will review my personal brand and reconsider my direction."350 — Acceptance / the Power zoneThe Choice is activated, turning crisis into opportunity. Consciousness shifts from victim to sovereign.

The distillation: The external event is the same (Mệnh). If we look purely at the chart, we see all three suffering the same effect of a bad star. But the real difference lies in the layer of Ý Thức: at which frequency are they standing as they respond to the event.

  • Persons A and B are operating according to Nghiệp (unconscious reaction, Force).

  • Person C is operating according to Ý Thức (active choice, Power).

From here, three life trajectories begin to separate—without noise, but decisively. It is not adversity that decides a life, but the frequency of consciousness we use to respond to adversity.

B. Introducing David R. Hawkins and the Map of Consciousness

Behind every map there is always a person who has sat with certain questions long enough to no longer feel impatient for the answers. Dr. David R. Hawkins (1927–2012) was such a person. He observed the psyche not only at the surface of behaviour, but also traced the deeper structure of energy beneath it.

A clinical psychiatrist and a life member of the American Psychiatric Association, and at the same time a profound spiritual researcher, Hawkins spent decades investigating how consciousness works. His classic works—Power vs. Force, The Eye of the I, and Letting Go—gave humanity a shared language for speaking about what is by nature invisible.

Hawkins proposed that consciousness can be represented along a logarithmic scale from 0 to 1000. What we need to grasp is not the absolute number, but the division into two energetic zones:

  1. The Force zone (below 200): States such as Shame, Guilt, Fear, Anger. This is the zone that drains energy, where life feels like an exhausting battle. In Tử Vi Tâm Thức, this is when we are dominated by debilitated Sát tinh (malefic stars) and swept into the loops of karmic consequence.

  2. The Power zone (above 200): States such as Courage, Willingness, Acceptance, Love. This is the zone that regenerates energy, where life flows naturally. This is when we activate our Dụng thần (the favourable element) and the power of self-mastery.

An important note for the reader: Hawkins repeatedly emphasised that this is a metaphorical map, not the territory itself. It is useful when used as a compass to recognise tendencies of consciousness and to orient transformation. It becomes distorted if we turn it into a score for comparison, for self-elevation (a subtle conceit), or for putting ourselves down.

Placed correctly, this map helps us answer the essential question of this book: "Right now, before this chart and this period of fate, am I living worn down by Mệnh, dragged along by Nghiệp, or building with Ý Thức?"

C. An overview of the 17 levels of consciousness: the climate zones of the soul

If we see the Map of Consciousness as a topographical map, then these 17 levels are the climate zones of the mind. Each zone has its own temperature, its own light, and its own characteristic movement of energy. What matters is not which level you are at, so you can label yourself or feel superior, but the awakening that recognises: When the mind falls into this climate zone, what will the weather of my life become?

Here, we still hold firmly to the three-fold lens:

  1. Mệnh: The base climate. For example, a person whose Cự Môn star is debilitated often has a damp base climate, prone to leaning toward the zone of Doubt or Fear.

  2. Nghiệp: The recurring storms. When an event arrives, we are swept back down to the lower zone by unconscious habit.

  3. Ý Thức: The ability to climb to higher ground to escape the flood, where the light is clearer.

Hawkins describes human consciousness as ranging from 20 to 1000. The crucial point lies at the number 200 (Courage). This is the boundary between life and death:

  • Below 200 (the Force zone): We are victims of life. We drain our energy in resistance. This is the zone where the debilitated Sát tinh are most active.

  • Above 200 (the Power zone): We are builders of life. We regenerate energy in order to radiate it. This is the zone where the Cát tinh (auspicious stars) and the Dụng thần are activated.

Below is an overview table of the 17 levels of energy:

Core insight: the oscillation of consciousness

A harmful misunderstanding many people fall into: thinking that they are fixed at one number.

In reality, human consciousness is like a stock chart, oscillating continuously throughout the day and depending on each domain of life (each area, each palace of the chart):

  • In the Cung Quan Lộc (the Career palace), you may be very rational and courageous (Level 400–200).

  • But in the Cung Phu Thê (the Marriage palace), a single careless remark from your partner can send you plunging into the zone of Fear or Anger (Level 100–150).

In Tử Vi, this is precisely the difference between the palaces (cung). There are palaces we master (Power) and palaces where we owe a debt (Force). Seeing that oscillation is the first step in the maturing of Ý Thức. At that point, you no longer identify yourself with the anger or the fear. You step back and observe: "Ah, I’ve just dropped to level 150. This is the old habit of Nghiệp. I have the right to choose again."

That is the moment you stop living by a dead chart and begin to activate a living destiny.

D. The 200 boundary — the watershed between Force and Power

There is a very thin moment in the inner life: you are still in the same circumstance, but the way you stand within it has changed. There is no longer the feeling of being backed into a corner, no longer the urge to bare your teeth and fight or to shrink away and flee. It is only a slightly deeper breath, a little more inner space. Hawkins calls this boundary level 200—the crossing point between sinking and floating.

According to Hawkins, 200 (Courage) is the tipping point of consciousness.

  • Below 200: The mind operates by the mechanism of Force (coercion / grasping).

  • Above 200: The mind shifts to Power (inner strength / self-mastery).

In passing, these two words sound similar in terms of strength, but if you have ever lived long enough with both, you will feel the difference in your very cells: Force makes us "rigid" (straining), while Power makes us "steady" (grounded).

The opposition between Force and Power

FORCE (coercion — below 200) The zone of Nghiệp & the debilitated Sát TinhPOWER (inner strength — above 200) The zone of Ý Thức & the Dụng Thần
Energy depletionThe harder you try, the more tired you become; the more you strain, the more rigid you grow. This is applied force, an uphill grind against fate.Energy regeneration: you work without exhaustion, you give and grow fuller. Energy is self-arising, lifting you up the slope.
MotivationFear-based: "I have to win so I won’t get hurt," "I have to be right because I’m afraid of being punished." Control everything for safety.Love-based: "I do this because it is meaningful," "What can I contribute?"
Opposition & divisionAlways needs an "enemy" (another person, circumstances, or oneself) to confront.Unity & inclusiveness: sees others as companions, sees circumstances as lessons.
ResultMay win temporarily (on the battlefield), but is wounded within, and shatters easily under pressure from the surrounding environment.Durable, radiating peace to the whole surrounding system.

The Tử Vi Tâm Thức view: the price of being "below 200"

In our language, Force is precisely when Nghiệp is at the wheel. It is the moment when the debilitated Sát tinh (such as Kình Dương, Đà La, Hỏa Tinh) activate their dark side. Our reflexes then are fast and automatic, but based on painful memory and the ego’s defences.

Conversely, Power is not imposed authority, but the strength of Ý Thức. Level 200—Courage does not mean feeling no fear. Courage is daring to be present with fear without being controlled by it.

  • Below 200, the Kình Dương star is aggression, quarrelling, self-harm (Force).

  • Above 200, the Kình Dương star transforms into decisiveness, perseverance, the courage to commit (Power).

A metaphor: sinking and floating

Imagine consciousness as an ocean. Level 200 is the surface of the water. Below 200, we are dragged to the bottom by boulders of emotion (Guilt, Fear, Anger). The more we thrash about (using Force), the faster we sink and suffocate. Above 200, we let go of those boulders. The mind becomes light enough to float up (Power). Not because the sea is calm and the waves have stilled, but because we no longer carry so much unconscious weight. Only when we surface can we breathe, can we see the direction in which to swim to shore.

Hawkins observed that most of humanity is still submerged below level 200. This explains why human history is riddled with wars and conflicts.

And so the aim of this book—and the very heart of the method of changing one’s fortune—is not to help you climb to the level of a saint (700+) at once. The most practical aim is to help you lay a minimum foundation at 200:

  • Enough courage to be honest with your own chart.

  • Enough steadiness not to react blindly to a difficult period of fate.

  • Enough clarity to turn a Sát tinh into a Dụng thần.

When you reach the threshold of 200, your question will reverse direction: no longer "Why is my life so wretched?" (the victim), but "What attitude do I choose before this problem?" (the master).

E. Force vs Power: the biological mechanism of Nghiệp and Ý Thức

There are times when we think we are strong, but we are really only tense. And there are times when we are very soft, very still, yet we create a transformation deeper and wider than any imposition. Hawkins calls these two mechanisms Force and Power.

I like to see them as two kinds of energy: one that comes from the fear that must control, and one that comes from a steadiness solid enough that it need not control.

When you understand this difference, you will begin to see something subtle: the same outward action, but with a different inner ground, produces a different result. This is where the model of Mệnh–Nghiệp–Ý Thức becomes most alive:

  • Mệnh gives us the initial conditions (the chart).

  • Nghiệp is the tendency toward automatic reflex (usually Force).

  • Ý Thức is the right to choose to shift to a higher vibratory level (Power).

1. The scientific view: decoding the mechanism of Nghiệp

Why is the force of Nghiệp so hard to resist? Because it does not lie in thought alone; it lies in your body.

  • Force (the force of Nghiệp) corresponds to the sympathetic nervous system (Fight-or-Flight): When an event strikes (a bad transiting star), the body immediately contracts, the heart races, the mind goes on high alert. This is the primitive survival mechanism. The energy here flares up very quickly (fire rising) but is terribly depleting, because its fuel is stress hormones (cortisol/adrenaline). In Tử Vi, this is the debilitated state of the mind—dark and stifled.

  • Power (the Choice) corresponds to the parasympathetic nervous system (Rest-and-Digest / Social Engagement): The body softens, the breath sinks deep into the belly, the brain shifts into Alpha waves. Only from this state do we gain the capacity to connect, to empathise, and to see far. The energy does not explode noisily but is enduring, like flowing water. In Tử Vi, this is the well-placed / exalted state—clear and wise.

2. A comparison table of Force and Power

Below are the fundamental differences that help you self-diagnose which kind of energy you are using to solve a problem:

CriterionFORCE (coercion) — the mechanism of NghiệpPOWER (inner strength) — the mechanism of Ý Thức
MotiveFear, the wish to control, to prove: "I have to win so I won’t have to face the truth." "I do this because it ought to be so."Love, the wish to walk together, to understand one another: "I do this because it’s more joyful to go together." "I do this because it is meaningful."
ImpactCreates imposition, blame, leading to resistance and isolation. The energy here (Mệnh/Thân) explodes but does not last.Radiates naturally, drawing others in. The regenerative energy (the Dụng thần) is activated, giving durability to every change.
EmotionTension, fatigue, exhaustion after winning. Feeling empty even though you have succeeded.Feeling peaceful, at ease even while still making an effort. Nourished by one’s own purpose.
RootRests on the Ego: better/worse, right/wrong.Rests on the true Self: truthful and upright.
ResultMay win temporarily (on the battlefield), but is wounded within, and shatters easily under pressure from the surrounding environment.Durable, radiating peace to the whole surrounding ecosystem.

3. A practical application

Consider this difference through an everyday example of raising a child (or managing staff):

  • Using Force (debilitated Sát tinh): You force the child to study through scolding and threats.

    • Result: The child may obey immediately (short-term effect), but inside, fear takes shape, a quiet defiance, or worse, a habit of enslavement to pressure. The parent–child relationship cracks.

  • Using Power (well-placed Cát tinh): You inspire, walk alongside, and patiently explain.

    • Result: It may be slow at first, but the child develops intrinsic motivation and the joy of discovery. The parent–child relationship becomes an alliance.

The key does not lie in the teaching technique, but in the state of the one who teaches. The very same words, spoken from Force, are sharp as a knife (creating Nghiệp); spoken from Power, they are warm as sunlight (creating merit).

Conclusion: The thought running throughout this book is: we do not change our lives by forcing ourselves (Force) to become better, but by recognising and raising the level of our consciousness (Power). When the energetic foundation shifts, behaviour changes of itself, relationships change of themselves, and the malefic stars in the chart transform automatically into lessons rather than disasters.
