The Tool: Bát Tự

5.9 The Ten Gods: A Psychological Language

1. What Is the Thập Thần? — A Lens of Consciousness

Within the frame of reference of “Tử Vi Tâm Thức Học” (the study of consciousness through Purple Star astrology), we need to redefine the Thập Thần (the Ten Gods) to escape its superstitious, theocratic colouring.

The Thập Thần are not ten deities ruling over fate, but 10 Psychological Archetypes existing within every human being. If we take the Day Master as the Subject-Self, then the Thập Thần are the Environment and the Relationships with which that Self interacts.

  • Mệnh (the Given): The set of 10 Gods present in your Bát Tự (Four Pillars) determines your innate psychological “configuration.” For example: a person with much Thực Thần (the Eating God) is innately fond of freedom; a person with much Chính Quan (the Direct Officer) is innately fond of structure.

  • Nghiệp (the Pattern): When consciousness is at a low frequency (Force — below 200), the Thập Thần manifest as negative reactive habits, fears, and attachments (the shadow side).

  • Nguyện (the Choice): When we raise awareness (Power — above 200), we actively transform the energy of the Thập Thần into talent and wisdom (the bright side).

2. The 5 Psychological Drivers (The 5 Psychological Drivers)

We call these the “Five Elements of Consciousness.” All human behaviour, however complex, springs from these 5 core drivers. The Bát Tự chart shows which driver governs you most strongly (Nghiệp) and which driver you lack and need to supply (Nguyện/Dụng Thần).

God Group Core Driver Psychological Expression When Out of Balance (Nghiệp)
Tỷ Kiếp THE SELF
(Identity & Ego)
The need to affirm “who I am,” a sense of independent existence, self-respect. Stubborn, selfish, isolated, or losing oneself entirely in the crowd.
Thực Thương CREATIVITY
(Expression & Flow)
The need to express emotion, freedom, to break limits, to seek joy. Indulgent, delusional, defiant of rules, lacking discipline.
Tài Tinh POSSESSION
(Possession & Reality)
The need to control resources, material security, connection with reality. Pragmatic, enslaved to money, wasteful, lacking humane responsibility.
Quan Sát PRINCIPLE
(Order & Power)
The need for order, honour, and social standing. Rigid, autocratic, imposing, or fearful and anxious. Endless struggle.
Ấn Tinh NURTURE
(Growth & Spirit)
The need to learn, to find a teacher, to connect spiritually, to be sheltered. Dependent, detached from reality, “daydreaming,” procrastinating.

3. Detailed Decoding & Methods of Transformation (the Dụng Thần of the mind)

In this section, I have refined the part on “application.” Instead of general advice, I turn it into a “consciousness exercise” (Mindfulness Practice). The Dụng Thần is not about seeking an outer element, but about activating an inner psychological behaviour.

Part 1: Tỷ Kiếp, Thực Thần, Thương Quan, Chính Tài

God Archetype The Bright Side The Shadow Side The Dụng Thần of Consciousness (Transformation)
Tỷ Kiếp The Self / The Ego Independent, self-directed, a firm will, a support for others. Stubborn, an oversized ego, blind competition, solitude through pride. LEARN TO COOPERATE & LISTEN. Deep Listening: Practise letting others finish speaking without judging; try nodding. Win-Win: Shift from “I win — you lose” thinking to “we both win.”
Thực Thần The Gourmet / The Child Natural creativity (Flow), refinement, knowing how to savour happiness, kind-hearted. Lazy, procrastinating, whimsical, avoiding pressure, living for pleasure and neglecting things. GIVE DISCIPLINE TO INSPIRATION. Micro-Habits: Break goals into small pieces to avoid laziness. Creativity with a destination: Don’t only dream; turn ideas into concrete products.
Thương Quan The Innovator / The Rebel Exceptionally clever, breakthrough thinking, daring to change the beaten path. Wild, arrogant, verbal transgression, opposing merely to satisfy the ego. DIRECT THE DISRUPTION. Constructive Criticism: Offer feedback to build, not to tear down. Control the Ego: Recognise when you are arguing merely to prove you are the cleverer.
Chính Tài The Steward Responsible, practical, diligent, sustainable financial management. Miserly, short-term vision, enslaved to security, attached. EXPAND. Invest in the intangible: Spend on knowledge and experience rather than only hoarding. Giving: Practise giving to break the fear of loss and attachment.

Part 2: Thiên Tài, Chính Quan, Thiên Quan, Chính Ấn, Thiên Ấn

God Archetype The Bright Side The Shadow Side The Dụng Thần of Consciousness (Transformation)
Thiên Tài The Investor / Adventurer Generous, keen to opportunity, flexible, good at forging connections. Grasping in every direction, dishonest, unsteady, unreliable. COMMITMENT & HONESTY. Forge steadiness (Grit): Learn to go deep into one single thing. Risk management: Distinguish between “smart investment” and “gambling on luck.”
Chính Quan The Judge / The Leader Authoritative, exemplary, fair, living by principle. Conservative, rigid, dogmatic, self-imposed pressure for perfection. SOFTEN & LET GO. Accept imperfection: Understand that error is a part of growth. Relaxation meditation: Reduce tension and the need to control everything.
Thiên Quan The Warrior / Pressure Steely mettle, courage, the capacity to survive and to lead in crisis. Suspicious, aggressive, excessively anxious, using violence to suppress fear. FACE THE FEAR. Channeling Energy: Use high-intensity sport to discharge the aggressive energy. Inner Peace: Find peace within rather than waging war outside.
Chính Ấn The Mother / The Scholar Benevolent, eager to learn, deeply intellectual, knowing how to nurture. Reliant, passive, all theory, detached from reality (bookish). ACT IN REALITY. Action-bias: Reduce time spent thinking, increase time spent acting in reality. Self-reliance: Practise solving problems yourself rather than waiting for help.
Thiên Ấn The Sorcerer / The Mystic Keen intuition, transcendent thinking, a capacity for healing. Solitary, delusional, detached from reality, melancholic, hard to understand. GROUNDING. Connect with reality: Do manual work, tidy the house, exercise to balance the energy. Share your emotions: Learn to express your inner world so others can understand it.

“The Dụng Thần is not a life-raft from outside. The Dụng Thần is the muscle of consciousness you are laziest to train.”

When your chart says you need a “Dụng Thần of Thực Thương” (to discharge an over-strong self), it does not mean you merely need to wear green or black gemstone jewellery. It means that your Nghiệp is blocked by an excessive suppression of emotion, and your exercise (Nguyện) is to learn to share, create, and open up. That is the true Dụng Thần.

4. The Consciousness Mapping — the East–West Confluence

(Mapping The 10 Gods to Jungian Archetypes & Hawkins Scale)

The table below does not merely list; it also shows the characteristic “vibrational zone” of each God.

  • The Red Zone (Force < 200): The zone of depleting energy, born of fear and ego (Nghiệp).

  • The Green Zone (Power > 200): The zone of regenerating energy, born of love, wisdom, and acceptance (Nguyện).

Thập Thần (Eastern) Jungian Archetype (Western) Frequency (Hawkins) The Bright Side (Power) The Shadow Side (Force)
Kiếp Tài The Protector 125 → 175 Proactive, Breakthrough Fear of loss, Rivalry
Tỷ Kiếp Ego / Warrior 150 → 200 Courage, Self-reliance Pride, Stubbornness
Thiên Tài Trader / Explorer 200 → 250 Opportunity, Acuity Recklessness, Frivolity
Chính Tài The Steward 200 → 250 Stability, Pragmatism Fear of scarcity, Miserliness
Thiên Quan Warrior / Guardian 200 → 250 Mettle, Authority Anxiety, Defensiveness
Thương Quan Rebel / Magician 200 → 310 Breakthrough Rebellion, Arrogance
Chính Quan The Judge 250 → 310 Discipline, Responsibility Constraint, Fear of error
Thực Thần The Creator 250 → 350 Flow, Ease Laziness, Procrastination
Chính Ấn The Sage 275 → 350 Understanding, Benevolence Passivity, Procrastination
Thiên Ấn The Mystic 300 → 400 Intuition, Awakening Vagueness, Delusion
  • Why do Kiếp Tài & Tỷ Kiếp have the lowest frequency (125–200)?

    • This is the zone of the Ego. The frequencies 125 (Desire) and 150 (Anger/Competition) are humanity’s basic survival drivers.

    • A word to the reader: Do not reject Tỷ Kiếp/Kiếp Tài. You need it to have “Courage” (the 200 mark — Courage). Without a healthy ego, you cannot climb to the higher levels.

  • The leap of Thực Thần & the Resource stars (250–400):

    • Why is this group high? Because their essence is Acceptance and Reason.

    • Thực Thần represents the state of Flow — not resisting reality; this is a natural state of dynamic meditation.

    • Thiên Ấn reaches the threshold of 400 (higher reason / intuition) because it transcends ordinary logic to touch wisdom (Intuition).

  • An important note on the “Shadow Side”:

    • Although Thiên Ấn can reach 400, when on its Shadow Side (Vagueness) it can plunge straight down into the zone of fear (100) or grief (75).

    • Conclusion: The frequency in the table is a vibrational potential, not a fixed number.

5. Decoding Defence Mechanisms — When the Thập Thần Meet Crisis (Stress Response)

We call this the “Psychological Immune System.” Under pressure, each Thập Thần structure activates an automatic defence mechanism (autopilot).

  • Purpose: Survival (Nghiệp).

  • Consequence: Uncontrolled, it creates conflict or deadlock.

  • Solution: Shift from Reacting to Responding.

God involved Reactive pattern (Nghiệp) Transformation (Nguyện)
FIGHT – Turned outward — “Attack is the best form of defence.”
Thương Quan Attacking with words, sharp reasoning, mockery. Pause for 3 seconds. Ask: “Do I want to solve the problem, or do I just want to win?” Discharge the excess energy through movement (sport) before communicating.
Thất Sát Acting drastically, smashing things, or using power to suppress.
Kiếp Tài / Tỷ Kiếp Stubbornness, arguing head-to-head, refusing to yield in order to protect the ego.
FLIGHT – Turned inward — “If I don’t see it, the problem doesn’t exist.”
Ấn (Chính/Thiên) Retreating into the inner world, sleeping it off, or drifting into idle fantasy, “disconnecting” from reality. Practise mindfulness. Name the emotion you are fleeing. A small action: “Do one concrete thing right now (wash the dishes, tidy the house)” to anchor yourself back in reality.
Thực Thần Seeking comfort through eating, shopping, entertainment (binge-watching) to soothe sorrow.
Thiên Tài Seeking new pleasures (new people, new projects) to escape old responsibilities.
FREEZE – Paralysis — “Afraid to be wrong, so afraid to do anything at all.”
Chính Quan Overthinking, fear of breaking rules, fear of judgement, leading to indefinite procrastination. Accept imperfection. Mantra: “Done is better than perfect.” Break the problem into tiny steps to shatter the paralysis.
Chính Tài Fear of losing resources (money, affection), huddling to preserve what one has, not daring to decide.

6. 10 Questions for Self-Reflection

(The 10 Gods Mindfulness Audit)

Take 10 minutes of stillness, breathe deeply, and answer the following questions honestly. Remember: No judgement. Only observation.

A Self-Diagnosis Worksheet for Consciousness

(The 10 Gods Mindfulness Audit Worksheet)

STEP 1: NAME THE “GOD” NOW IN CHARGE

Which God is “at the wheel” of my mind right now?

In the past 24 hours, which voice has sounded loudest in your head?

  • The voice of fear/anxiety (Sát — the Killing)?
  • The voice of pleasure/indulgence (Thực — the Eating)?
  • The voice of judgement/principle (Quan — the Officer)?
  • The voice of ego/pride (Tỷ Kiếp)?

Does my chart have any God too strong (in excess) or too weak (lacking)?

Look at your Bát Tự. Which element dominates overwhelmingly? That is your main psychological “battlefield.”

STEP 2: MEASURE THE ENERGY (BRIGHT SIDE – SHADOW SIDE)

At what frequency am I operating?

Be honest with your present feeling:

  • Force (Shadow): Tired, Tense, Blaming, Fearful, Straining.
  • Power (Bright): Light, Inspired, Grateful, Accepting, at Peace.

Am I chasing the Ego or the Lesson?

  • Am I doing this because I want to prove I am right/good (Ego)?
  • Or because it is good for our shared growth (Spiritual Lesson)?
STEP 3: OBSERVE THE AUTOMATIC REACTION

Under pressure, what is my default mechanism?

  • Fight: Do I bristle, attack, argue?
  • Flight: Do I avoid, procrastinate, slip away?
  • Freeze: Do I go numb, unable to decide?
STEP 4: ACTIVATE THE DỤNG THẦN

What action is my Dụng Thần (the remedy)?

To rebalance this state, what must I do right now that runs counter to the old habit?

(For example: if you are in fear (Sát) → the remedy is to act at once (Thực/Ấn). If you are procrastinating (Ấn), the remedy is a small discipline (Quan/Tài).)

“Fate changes at the very moment you STOP the old reaction and CHOOSE a new one.”

An important note:

“Do not try to fix all 10 Gods at once.”

In each stage of life (a 10-year major cycle) or each year (the annual reading), the universe usually sends only one main exam through one specific God.

  • There are years when Thất Sát (the Seven Killings) batters you at work → the lesson is Mettle.

  • There are years when the Wealth stars make you suffer over money → the lesson is Letting Go of Craving.

Identifying “which voice is loudest” (Step 1) is precisely finding the “exam question” of this stage.
