A. THE KỴ THẦN: THE CHOKE POINT OF THE FLOW

Redefined: what is the Kỵ Thần?

No chart is bad—there are only currents of energy not yet understood and not yet transformed.

In Bát Tự (Four Pillars), when an element becomes too strong (abundant) or is repressed too far, it creates what is called the Kỵ Thần (the unfavourable element / the Shadow Element). These are the karmic choke points that reappear again and again in your life as: the same failures, the same script of broken relationships, or periodic emotional crises.

Remember this formula:

"Nghiệp is the pattern. Ý Thức is seeing that pattern and transforming it."

The Kỵ Thần is not an enemy. The Kỵ Thần is a strict teacher who uses pain to show you where you need to grow.

A tool: tracing the Kỵ Thần through the season of birth (a seasonal audit)

The simplest way to recognise the Kỵ Thần is to look at your month of birth. The season of birth determines the strongest energetic environment (the weather) you breathed the moment you were born. The energy of that season is usually what you have "most in surplus"—and what is in surplus usually becomes the unfavourable element.

(Use this table for reference.)

Season of birthMonthAbundant element (surplus)Potential Kỵ Thần
SpringMonths 1–3 (Dần, Mão, Thìn)MỘC 🌿Mộc (if Self-Strong) – over-expansive energy
SummerMonths 4–6 (Tỵ, Ngọ, Mùi)HỎA 🔥Hỏa (if Self-Strong) – uncontrolled blazing energy
AutumnMonths 7–9 (Thân, Dậu, Tuất)KIM ⚔️Kim (if Self-Strong) – cutting energy, extreme judgement
WinterMonths 10–12 (Hợi, Tý, Sửu)THỦY 💧Thủy (if Self-Strong) – deeply sinking, melancholic, evasive energy
TransitionMonths 3, 6, 9, 12 (Thìn, Mùi, Tuất, Sửu)THỔ 🏔️Thổ (if Self-Strong) – sluggish, obstinate, clinging energy

⚠️ Important note: This is only a preliminary screening. The true Kỵ Thần requires analysing the whole Bát Tự chart (4 pillars + the Luck Pillars). But the season of birth is a wonderful first step for pointing you in the right direction.

1. The nature: not an "evil star," but "surplus energy"

In Tử Vi Tâm Thức, let us redefine the Kỵ Thần (the Shadow Element) scientifically:

  • The Kỵ Thần is not a "deity" that follows you around to do you harm.

  • It is a current of energy that unbalances the system.

  • It is like eating too much (for the Self-Strong) or being made to carry too much (for the Self-Weak). Energy that is not transformed turns into toxic energy.

2. The principle of identification: the glass of water

Imagine the Nhật Chủ (Day Master, the Self) as a glass of water:

  • For the Self-Strong (a glass already overflowing):

    • Mechanism: You are already too strong, with a surplus of self-energy.

    • Kỵ Thần: The elements that keep pouring in more water (nurture/support).

    • Psychological result: Arrogance, obstinacy, an inflated ego, refusal to listen.

  • For the Self-Weak (a glass drained to the bottom):

    • Mechanism: You are weak, low on fuel, easily wounded.

    • Kỵ Thần: The elements that keep drawing water out (draining/output) or shattering the glass (control/subjugation).

    • Psychological result: Fear, burnout, anxiety, a sense of victimhood.

3. A reference table of the Kỵ Thần & its psychological expressions

4. Shadow profiles: when the Kỵ Thần takes hold

This table helps you recognise which "demon" (the Shadow) is driving you in times of crisis.

THỔ – The MartyrBeing unacknowledged, being taken advantage ofOver-sacrificing then resenting, "I did everything and yet..."Fear of abandonment / unworthiness (rejection)
KIM – The JudgeInjustice, disorder, broken standardsHarsh judgement, cold cutting-offFear of losing control / imperfection (injustice)
THỦY – The GhostSocial pressure, being forced to confrontRetreating, vanishing, living in an inner worldFear of being hurt / insecurity

5. Real-life profiles: three classic shadow scenarios

Theory comes alive when we look at concrete lives. Below are three classic examples of how the Kỵ Thần manipulates the mind and creates loops of suffering.

THE KỴ THẦN, ADVANCED: MEASURING THE POWER OF THE SHADOW

Knowing which element is your Kỵ is not enough. You need to know which stage that element is in within the cycle of energy (the Cycle of Life and Death, Vòng Trường Sinh). This determines how the "Shadow" attacks you: loudly and openly, or silently gnawing from within.

The Kỵ Thần across the Cycle of Life and Death (12 energetic stages)

Active Shadow (the Kỵ Thần operating strongly, causing clear turmoil)

StageName of the stageKỵ Thần energyPsychological expression
1Trường Sinh (Birth)Newly appeared, weak but persistentA vague sense of unease, anxiety with no clear cause
2Mộc Dục (Bathing)Unsettled, easily swayedEasily tempted, lacking discipline, craving short-term pleasures
3Quan Đới (Capping)Beginning to strengthen, wanting to assert itselfAn inflated ego, wanting control, beginning to create conflict
4Lâm Quan (Peak)Very strong, on the riseExtreme ambition, workaholism, burnout from chasing goals
5Đế Vượng (Emperor)EXTREMELY STRONG – the peak of energy⚠️ MOST DANGEROUS: emotional eruption, crisis, major events occurring
6Suy (Decline)Beginning to weaken, but still influentialFatigue after crisis, beginning to look back at oneself

Passive Shadow (the Kỵ Thần hidden deep, gnawing from within)

StageName of the stageKỵ Thần energyPsychological expression
7Bệnh (Illness)Weak but smoulderingStagnation, loss of drive, a feeling of being "stuck"
8Tử (Death)Almost ceased operatingGiving up, loss of direction, "clinically dead" in spirit
9Mộ (Tomb)Buried, hidden deepThe problem pressed into the unconscious, unnoticed but still influential
10Tuyệt (Extinction)Almost vanishedMinimal energy, little direct influence
11Thai (Embryo)Forming againBeginning to reappear, faint signs of the old loop
12Dưỡng (Nurturing)Being nourishedThe Kỵ energy quietly accumulating, preparing for a new cycle

THE KỴ THẦN & DEFENCE MECHANISMS: THE UNCONSCIOUS SHIELDS

When the Kỵ Thần attacks (pressure, wounding), the Ego immediately raises a wall to protect itself. Sigmund Freud called these defence mechanisms.

Depending on which element is your Kỵ Thần, you tend to "choose" a very characteristic shield. To recognise this shield means you have begun to lower your weapons and truly heal.

Kỵ elementPrimary defenceConcrete expression
MỘC (Wood)FIGHT – Resist / controlWhen threatened → attack first, impose opinions, "it must be my way." Projection: blaming others instead of looking within.
HỎA (Fire)EXPLOSION – Erupt / destroyWhen betrayed → erupt in anger, burn down every bridge. Acting Out: impulsive action, destroying and then regretting.
THỔ (Earth)FREEZE – Freeze / sacrificeWhen taken advantage of → endure, over-sacrifice, then resent. Reaction Formation: acting opposite to true feeling ("I'm not angry" while boiling inside).
KIM (Metal)CONTROL – Control / judgeWhen order is lost → impose rigid rules, judge harshly. Intellectualisation: using reason to avoid feeling ("I analyse, I don't feel").
THỦY (Water)FLIGHT – Flee / vanishWhen pressured → retreat, vanish, live in an inner world. Dissociation: detaching from reality, "that person isn't me."

THE KỴ THẦN & THE INNER CHILD: THE FIVE CORE WOUNDS

According to Lise Bourbeau, we are born with wounds of the soul that need healing. In Bát Tự, the Kỵ Thần is the current of energy that triggers these wounds most painfully.

Core woundTypical starSurface shadow (the protective shell)Repeating pattern (PATTERN) (the karmic script)
ABANDONMENT fear of lonelinessThái ÂmWithdrawalWhen angry, cutting off connection, locking oneself into a private world so as "not to be hurt any further."
Thiên ĐồngDependencyWhen difficulty comes → seeking someone to lean on, refusing to grow up in order to be cared for.
Thiên TướngPleasingWhen afraid of losing a relationship → sacrificing oneself, pleasing others unconditionally.
REJECTION fear of worthlessnessThái DươngShow offFeeling no one needs them → striving to do grand/prominent things to prove their existence.
Phá QuânEscapistFeeling unrecognised → tearing everything down, leaving for elsewhere, changing environment constantly.
INJUSTICE fear of imperfectionCự MônDefensiveSuspecting others dislike them → using sharp words to attack ("bristling like a hedgehog").
Tử ViRigidSeeing everything unstable and in disorder → imposing rigid rules, forcing everyone to meet their standard ("I am the centre").
BETRAYAL fear of losing controlLiêm TrinhPerfectionismSeeing an error → harsh judgement, unable to accept imperfection (in oneself and others).
Thiên CơControl of informationFearing being deceived/wrong → calculating every option, not daring to delegate to anyone.
SCARCITY / INSECURITY fear of not having enoughThiên PhủHoardingFearing future poverty and hardship → clinging to money, not daring to invest or give, living with a mindset of excessive stockpiling.
Tham LangCravingFearing emptiness → plunging into short-term seeking and acquiring like an unquenchable thirst.

NAMING THE SHADOW: THE FIVE SHADOW ARCHETYPES (JUNG)

According to Carl Jung, the Shadow is where the portions of energy rejected by Ý Thức are stored. The Kỵ Thần is the energy source that feeds these "shadow characters."

Kỵ elementShadow archetype (the shadow that reigns)Potential for integration (when lit by the light)
MỘC 🌿THE REBEL – Opposing every rule, destroying out of anger, accepting nothing, a wild ego.→ THE INNOVATOR – Using the power to break in order to clear away outdated customs and open a new path for the community.
HỎA 🔥THE AGGRESSOR – Using emotion to burn others up, hasty, tyrannical, manipulating through anger.→ THE WARRIOR (of the Light) – Using the flame of ardour to protect the weak and inspire action.
THỔ 🏔️THE MARTYR – Taking on burdens to prove one's importance, complaining, playing the victim of sacrifice.→ THE EARTH MOTHER – Nurturing without clinging, knowing how to set firm boundaries so as not to be exhausted by being used.
KIM ⚔️THE TYRANT JUDGE – Cold, ruthless, using reason to disparage, cutting off affection without mercy.→ THE TRUTH SEEKER – Using sharpness to discern right from wrong, bringing justice and order to the community.
THỦY 💧THE GHOST – Evading reality, toxic silence (the silent treatment), living in illusion and sulking.→ THE MYSTIC – Using inner depth to understand human life and heal the wounds of the soul.

CHECKLIST TABLE: MEASURING THE INTENSITY OF THE SHADOW

Look once more at your chart and your life. Tick the boxes you find true. This is a gauge of how strongly the Kỵ Thần influences your destiny.

TickAssessment criterion (recognisable sign)In-depth decoding (why is it dangerous?)
1. High density (the Kỵ Thần appears in > 2 pillars)The Kỵ Thần surrounds you from many sides (Year/Month/Hour). You feel cornered from the same direction, pressure closing in from family to career.
2. Extreme intensity (located at Đế Vượng / Lâm Quan)The Kỵ Thần is at the peak of its energy. It attacks head-on, causing great shocks or rapid collapse (crisis).
3. Internal conflict (a clash of stems/branches / a "Hình hại" harm)Fierce inner struggle throughout life. You wound yourself. The Kỵ Thần causes instability, change, and a tendency toward extreme choices.
4. Attack on the self (combining / breaking / controlling the Day Master)The Kỵ Thần strikes straight at the ego. You easily lose faith in yourself, your self-esteem is badly wounded, or you are manipulated from outside.
5. Wounds of the past (close to a childhood core wound)The Kỵ Thần re-triggers old pain (abandonment, humiliation...). You react to the present with the fear of the past.
6. Extreme defence (strong activation of a defence mechanism)You frequently use blame, denial, addiction, or social withdrawal to cope with stress.

YOUR DIAGNOSTIC RESULT

  • Level 1: Mild Kỵ Thần (1–2 ✓) — State: under control. You occasionally face difficulty, but Ý Thức is still strong enough to adjust. A few small changes of habit are all you need.
  • Level 2: Moderate Kỵ Thần (3 ✓) — State: warning. The shadow is beginning to affect your quality of life. You need to practise energy-balancing exercises in earnest.
  • Level 3: Severe Kỵ Thần (4–6 ✓) — State: red alert. Your foundational energy is severely blocked. You need a "major surgery" of consciousness. This is not a time for draining away, but a time for rebirth.

B. THE MECHANISMS OF COLLISION: FROM CONFLICT TO TRANSFORMATION

As we go deeper into the structure of the Earthly Branches, we begin to see subtler movements of energy. It is not simply a matter of abundant or declining, but of how the currents of energy collide, distort, tear at, or cancel one another out.

In Tử Vi Tâm Thức, we do not see Xung–Hình–Hại (clash–punishment–harm) as "bad luck." See them as psychological reaction mechanisms when the inner current of energy is strongly disturbed.

Each form of collision opens a kind of "Nghiệp" (Pattern) and demands a different kind of "Power" to overcome.

Type (mechanism of collision) Nature of the energy (the inner feeling) Psychological experience (the person) The lesson of transformation (the path)
LỤC XUNG (Clash) ⚡ Direct confrontation. Two opposing currents of energy rush straight at each other. Causes shattering, rapid change, sudden rupture. Shock & change. A feeling of collapsing without warning, fierce conflict, being forced to leave the old behind. Painful but decisive. Breakthrough. The clash is the strongest force for breaking through a dead end and escaping. A total change for oneself.
TƯƠNG HÌNH (Punishment) 🔒 Tearing, erosion. Energy pressed back, out of phase, causing a lingering, low-grade discomfort with no way out. Torment & self-inflicted pain. A feeling of being stuck. Self-blame, entanglement in toxic relationships that do harm. Acceptance & letting go. Learn to allow yourself to be wrong.
LỤC HẠI (Harm) 🗡️ A hidden obstruction. Energy that pricks silently, a knife in the back. Betrayal & suspicion. A feeling of being needled, being harmed, an anxious and suspicious mind. Loss of faith in others. Emotional independence. Learn not to depend, and to stand firm on your own.
TƯƠNG PHÁ (Destruction) 💔 A cracking from within. A once-cohesive structure breaks down under accumulated energetic pressure. Disappointment & collapse. Bonds once thought lasting gradually break. The hidden sabotage of set plans. Rebuilding. Tear down and rebuild what no longer serves you.
TUYỆT (Extinction) 🌑 The extinction point of the cycle. The old energy ends completely. A state of "zero" or "void." Solitude & existential crisis. A feeling of losing all connection, falling into a deep pit, not knowing who you are. "The dark night of the soul." Rebirth. From the darkness comes the beginning of an entirely new life.

1. LỤC XUNG: THE UNIVERSE'S JOLT (THE CATALYST)

The clash is when two opposing currents of energy rush straight at each other at high speed. Do not fear the clash. In nature, a seed needs a jolt of force to break through its hard shell and sprout. In a human life, the clash is the universe's loud alarm bell: "It is time to change!"

It reveals itself in life as an unavoidable confrontation. You cannot compromise; you are forced to choose: either transform, or be crushed.

DECODING TABLE: THE 6 PAIRS OF CLASH & THEIR PSYCHOLOGICAL MEANING

Each pair of clash represents a specific inner conflict. See which pair you hold to understand the "battlefield" within you.

The clashing pair Nature of the energy (the warring elements) Psychological & life conflict (inner conflict)
TÝ ↔ NGỌ (Rat–Horse) Thủy controls Hỏa. Water quenches Fire. Reason vs. emotion. A conflict between thought/calculation (Tý) and passion/impulse (Ngọ). Life is often unsettled, with constant changes of home or job. Prone to mental stress.
MÃO ↔ DẬU (Cat–Rooster) Kim controls Mộc. Blade cuts wood. Trust vs. betrayal. The soft part confronts the sharp part. Prone to setbacks in close relationships, being double-crossed, or facing painful partings in order to grow.
DẦN ↔ THÂN (Tiger–Monkey) Kim controls Mộc. A collision of movement. Displacement & accidents. Both are "post-horse" (transit) elements. A life of much upheaval, often having to travel far, prone to traffic accidents or physical collisions. A hot temper, a love of control.
TỴ ↔ HỢI (Snake–Pig) Thủy controls Hỏa. Water quenches Fire. Curiosity vs. contentment. The conflict of those who love to debate and inquire. Prone to gossip and notoriety, but also attaining deep wisdom through constant friction.
THÌN ↔ TUẤT (Dragon–Dog) Thổ clashes with Thổ. Same energy, opposed. Spirituality & solitude. A deep conflict over values. Those with this clash often have strong intuition, are often lonely, face difficulty in marriage, but easily find their way into spirituality/art.
SỬU ↔ MÙI (Ox–Goat) Thổ clashes with Thổ. A heavy, suppressive weight. Pressure & obstacles. A life of many obstacles on the road that must be overcome. Prone to anxiety and overthinking, susceptible to digestive illnesses or tumours (belonging to Thổ).

2. TƯƠNG HÌNH: HIDDEN PRESSURE & THE SELF-MADE PRISON (THE INTERNAL PRISON)

If the clash is an explosion that flings you out of your comfort zone, then the punishment is a compression that presses you inward. It is like wearing clothes too tight, shoes too small. The energy cannot circulate; it is distorted, creating persistent psychological complexes.

In psychology, Tương Hình is the mechanism of self-sabotage and rumination.

DECODING TABLE: THE 4 FORMS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL PRESSURE (HÌNH)

See which kind of "prison" you are trapped in below:

Type of punishment Structure (branches) Inner & life experience (psychological impact)
1. UNGRATEFUL Dần–Tỵ–Thân (Tiger–Snake–Monkey) Betrayal & dissatisfaction. You often feel you give much but receive ingratitude in return ("doing a favour and earning a grudge"). Your inner life is full of tearing and dissatisfaction, prone to comparison and a sense of injustice. Easily entangled in complicated relationships or gossip.
2. STAGNATION (Bullying/Burden) Sửu–Mùi–Tuất (Ox–Goat–Dog) Burden & fear of letting go. A feeling of "I must carry the whole world." You often take on family and work responsibilities. Stubborn, obstinate, hard to open up, always feeling heavy and trapped within your own life.
3. SELF-PUNISHMENT Thìn–Thìn; Ngọ–Ngọ; Dậu–Dậu; Hợi–Hợi Self-nagging & overthinking. Your greatest enemy is yourself. You often self-blame, over-worry (anxiety), or pursue perfectionism to the point of exhaustion. Prone to depression or addictive habits.
4. UNCIVILISED Tý–Mão (Rat–Cat) Emotional & behavioural disorder. Conflict in close relationships due to a lack of respect for boundaries. Prone to causing misunderstanding, conflict, or being misunderstood because of one's attitude.

3. LỤC HẠI: THE INVISIBLE CUT & THE PAIN OF EXPECTATION

Harm is not loud like the clash. It is like a splinter lodged deep beneath the skin: no gushing blood, but a sting when touched, causing persistent discomfort.

In relationships, "harm" represents a mismatch of frequency. You give A, but the other receives it as B. You expect support but receive indifference. It is this "out-of-sync" quality that creates subtle cracks (micro-traumas) which gradually accumulate into distance.

DECODING TABLE: THE 6 FORMS OF HIDDEN HARM (THE 6 HARMS)

See which kind of "hidden stress" these pairs cause in your mind:

The harm pair Image (the feeling) Psychological & life experience (micro-trauma)
TÝ ↔ MÙI (Rat–Goat) Mismatch of phase. Water and dry earth overrun each other. Good intentions misread. You want to help, but the other thinks you are interfering. A relationship between kin that agrees on the surface but not in the heart. A feeling of being easily suppressed and "doing a favour, earning a grudge."
SỬU ↔ NGỌ (Ox–Horse) Loss of patience. Heavy earth slows the fire. Haste ruins the work. One side too slow (Sửu), the other too fast (Ngọ). Prone to disagreement from failing to keep each other's pace. A feeling of being held back or pushed too hard.
DẦN ↔ TỴ (Tiger–Snake) Hidden struggle. Both punishment (Hình) and harm. Conflict of interest & dissatisfaction. A relationship that seems warm at first but ends in resentment. A feeling of being used or of unhealthy competition.
MÃO ↔ THÌN (Cat–Dragon) Litigation. Mộc controls Thổ. Dispute & demand. Prone to disputes over property, land, or rights. A tendency to scrutinise, always seeing injustice and lacking absolute trust.
THÂN ↔ HỢI (Monkey–Pig) Distance. Kim nurtures Thủy but is washed away. Loneliness within the relationship. Living side by side but not understanding each other. A feeling of emotional neglect even though the other is still present.
DẬU ↔ TUẤT (Rooster–Dog) Discord. "The rooster flies up into the tree." Jealousy & gossip. A living environment thrown into disorder, often scrutinised and slandered behind one's back. A feeling that one's private space is violated, hard to find peace.

4. TƯƠNG PHÁ: COLLAPSE IN ORDER TO REBUILD (DECONSTRUCTION)

Destruction is the energy that demands release. It is not loud like the clash, nor silent like harm; it is cracking. Like a crack in a dam or a wall, it signals that an old structure can no longer bear the pressure and is about to collapse.

In psychology, Tương Phá represents disillusionment. Painful, but necessary in order to see the truth.

DECODING TABLE: THE 6 FORMS OF STRUCTURAL RUPTURE

See which area of your life tends to be "torn down and rebuilt":

The break pair Mechanism of impact (form of rupture) Psychology & life events (breakdown to breakthrough)
TÝ ↔ DẬU (Rat–Rooster) Breaking control. Kim nurtures Thủy but to excess. Addiction & illusion. Falling into bad habits (drink, romance) that break one's self-discipline. The feeling of losing control is the shock that leads to awakening and re-establishing a healthy way of life.
MÃO ↔ NGỌ (Cat–Horse) Breaking the image. Mộc feeds Hỏa, burning too fast. Glamour & disillusionment. Being swept up in glittering appearances or risky investment. Financial or reputational collapse is the lesson that returns you to real value.
TỴ ↔ THÂN (Snake–Monkey) Both union and break. A good start, a collapsing end. Conflict in cooperation. Business partnerships or friendships that begin well but gradually reveal disagreements, breeding hidden conflict that erodes the commitment. A lesson about transparency from the very start.
DẦN ↔ HỢI (Tiger–Pig) Both union and break. Nurturing yet restraining. A bond that must be released. Hợi feeds Dần (nurture), but Dần breaks Hợi by recoiling force. A feeling of being held back by the very people dearest to you (parents/boss). You must break away (destruction) to grow.
THÌN ↔ SỬU (Dragon–Ox) Breaking the foundation. Two forms of Thổ collide hard. Instability of property. Prone to trouble with real-estate papers, construction, or sudden change within the family. A feeling of insecurity, of having to rebuild the foundation.
TUẤT ↔ MÙI (Dog–Goat) Breaking commitments. Dry earth breaks moist earth. Broken promises & change. Contracts and promises suddenly cancelled. A feeling of being "double-crossed" or having one's plans upended. Trains the capacity for flexible adaptation (agility).

5. TUYỆT: THE STILLNESS BEFORE DAWN (THE ZERO POINT)

Extinction is not death. Extinction is the trough of the sine wave of energy. It is the moment when the old current of energy has gone out completely, but the new current has not yet been born.

It is like the pause between two breaths, or the darkness before dawn. This is the stage when energy withdraws deep within to regenerate. Without extinction, there would be no new beginning (the embryo).

In psychology, extinction corresponds to the "dark night of the soul"—the stage when a person feels most lost, yet also when the Ego is weakest, so that the true Self may be awakened.

DECODING TABLE: PASSING THROUGH THE ZONE OF "EXTINCTION"

The state Psychological expression (the feeling) Opportunity for transformation
1. DISCONNECT Temporary loss of direction. A feeling that everything you believed in and pursued has suddenly become meaningless. Loss of connection with the outer world. A feeling that the "battery" has dropped to 0%. Deep rest. This is when the universe forces you to stop. Allow yourself to be idle, to sleep, to "do nothing" without feeling guilty.
2. THE VOID Existential crisis. The question "Who am I?" rings loudest. A feeling that every support is gradually collapsing. The old has died; the new has not yet come. Letting go. A golden chance to cut away old bonds, old habits, the old self. Ask: what needs to be let go because it no longer serves the new journey.
3. TOUCH POINT Humility. Reaching the very bottom, the Ego is forced to bow. No more arrogance. A return to a quiet, compassionate nature. Rebirth. From the ashes, a new idea unexpectedly arrives. The greatest ideas often appear right after this stage of extinction (moving into embryo/nurturing).

REFERENCE TABLE: THE 6 AXES OF CONFLICT IN THE 60 SEXAGENARY CYCLE

This table helps you recognise which "war zone" your Day/Year pillar of birth lies in relative to other pillars (or to another person).

Axis of clash (branch pair) The "Heaven-controlling, Earth-clashing" pairs (the strongest pillars – to note) Psychology & context (summary)
TÝ ↔ NGỌ (Water–Fire) Giáp Tý ↔ Canh Ngọ / Mậu Ngọ; Bính Tý ↔ Nhâm Ngọ / Canh Ngọ; Mậu Tý ↔ Giáp Ngọ / Nhâm Ngọ; Canh Tý ↔ Bính Ngọ / Giáp Ngọ; Nhâm Tý ↔ Bính Ngọ / Giáp Ngọ Unease & change. A conflict between reason (Tý) and impulse (Ngọ). Prone to sudden changes of home or job, or mental stress from conflicting thought and emotion.
SỬU ↔ MÙI (Earth–Earth) Ất Sửu ↔ Tân Mùi / Kỷ Mùi; Đinh Sửu ↔ Quý Mùi / Tân Mùi; Kỷ Sửu ↔ Ất Mùi / Quý Mùi; Tân Sửu ↔ Đinh Mùi / Ất Mùi; Quý Sửu ↔ Đinh Mùi / Ất Mùi Obstacles & restraint. Two layers of earth pressing on each other. A feeling of stagnation, of being bound, work meeting many obstacles. Prone to a melancholic mind, accumulation, inner suppression.
DẦN ↔ THÂN (Wood–Metal) Giáp Dần ↔ Canh Thân; Bính Dần ↔ Nhâm Thân / Canh Thân; Mậu Dần ↔ Giáp Thân / Nhâm Thân; Canh Dần ↔ Bính Thân / Giáp Thân; Nhâm Dần ↔ Mậu Thân / Bính Thân Upheaval & movement. A collision of displacement. A life of much strong upheaval, often travelling far, changing environment. Prone to physical collisions (traffic accidents, limbs).
MÃO ↔ DẬU (Wood–Metal) Ất Mão ↔ Tân Dậu / Kỷ Dậu; Đinh Mão ↔ Quý Dậu / Tân Dậu; Kỷ Mão ↔ Ất Dậu / Quý Dậu; Quý Mão ↔ Kỷ Dậu / Đinh Dậu Wounded relationships. Betrayal of trust. Mão (affection) is cut by Dậu (sharpness). Prone to problems in love, separation, or being scrutinised by colleagues and competed against for advantage.
THÌN ↔ TUẤT (Earth–Earth) Giáp Thìn ↔ Bính Tuất / Mậu Tuất; Bính Thìn ↔ Nhâm Tuất / Canh Tuất; Mậu Thìn ↔ Giáp Tuất / Nhâm Tuất; Canh Thìn ↔ Mậu Tuất / Bính Tuất; Nhâm Thìn ↔ Mậu Tuất / Bính Tuất Solitude & spirituality. A conflict over belief. A feeling of loneliness in the midst of a crowd. Prone to trouble in marriage, but this is a good jolt toward the spiritual path.
TỴ ↔ HỢI (Fire–Water) Ất Tỵ ↔ Tân Hợi / Kỷ Hợi; Đinh Tỵ ↔ Quý Hợi / Tân Hợi; Kỷ Tỵ ↔ Ất Hợi / Quý Hợi; Tân Tỵ ↔ Đinh Hợi / Ất Hợi; Quý Tỵ ↔ Kỷ Hợi / Đinh Hợi Gossip & dispute. A conflict that flares, dies down, then flares again. Prone to being misunderstood, arguing, clashing over views. But it also stimulates sharp thinking and adaptability.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: A MAP FOR NAVIGATING UPHEAVAL

Do not be afraid to see clash, punishment, or extinction in your chart or in a period of your life. See them as different "weather patterns." You cannot change the weather, but you can choose how to steer the ship of your life through it.

Below is a guiding map for the three most vital areas of a human life:

Type Work & career Relationships & love Inner growth
CLASH ⚡ Forced change. Being laid off, changing bosses, sudden restructuring that forces a re-examination of your career path and a search for a more dynamic environment. Direct conflict. Arguments flaring fiercely. A shocking event that forces you to define and re-set clearer boundaries. Facing the truth. Striking straight at what is wrong, forcing you to break down illusions and transform.
PUNISHMENT 🔒 Pressure & burnout. KPIs too high, driving yourself to exhaustion. A feeling of being trapped, unable to escape the grind. Expectation & gradual breakdown. Imposing your wishes on the other. A prolonged toxic relationship, arguing but unable to let go. Facing the Shadow. Learn to accept the ugly parts of yourself. Find your true self again.
HARM 🗡️ Gossip & injustice. Being blamed, needled by colleagues, misunderstood and gaining a bad name. Frustration at silent injustice. Hidden wounds. Encountering betrayal, emotional neglect. Small wounds gradually accumulating. Inner healing. Learn to let go of the ego and stop blaming, while cultivating empathy.
DESTRUCTION 💔 Broken plans. A contract suddenly cancelled, a project scrapped and started over. The collapse of structures once thought solid. Disillusionment. Seeing the true face of the other. A sudden separation or parting. Breaking old commitments/promises. Tearing down the old. Demolishing the worn-out ego to rebuild an entirely new being.
EXTINCTION 🌑 The end of a cycle. Closing a project, quitting a job without direction (a gap year), early retirement. "Empty" time to regenerate energy. Letting go. Completely ending a bond.
